The merger of the Cricket Green Methodist Church and the Fair Green Methodist Church (also called the Upper Green Methodist Church) in October 1943 has resulted in the emergence of the Mitcham Methodist Church.
John Wesley first preached in Mitcham on 12 January 1764; and since then there had been glimpses of Methodism in Mitcham. However, the Mitcham Methodist Church dates back to October 1785, when the Cricket Green Methodist Church was formed. The Mitcham Methodist Church Anniversary is celebrated on the First Sunday in October.
The ministry of evangelising with the goal of establishing a Church at the town centre began in September 1906 and worship services were held at the Vestry Hall for a period. The Fair Green Methodist Church (in the present post office area) was dedicated on 3 March 1909. Unfortunately, during the Second World War this Church building was destroyed on the night of 18th and the early hours of 19th September 1940 by the German bombing.
For a while the Fair Green Methodist Church held their Services in the Cricket Green Methodist Church. Both the Churches then began to worship together for a period with “closer cooperation” prior to their merger in October 1943, forming the Mitcham Methodist Church. The present Church was dedicated on 25 July 1959.
It was unfortunate that the Church had been leaking almost from the beginning, destroying the roof, the floor, the wiring, the lighting, etc. Though the Church opted for the re-development of the premises in the 2000s, the local Heritage and Conservation groups intervened on behalf of the local community and with the support of English Heritage (now called Historic England) for the conservation and preservation of the Church building. The renovated Church with refurbished roof, floor, wiring, lighting, front panel, etc., was dedicated on 15 October 2016.
The Mitcham Methodist Church stands as a symbol of unity and community with the vision of a sanctuary for one and all.
